A matched pair of carved door panels in the Teochew tradition of gold lacquer work, each reading in three registers over a black lacquer ground: a pierced fan-shaped top panel with warriors on horseback among flowering branches, an arched central scene of scholars and attendants in a garden gathered around a calligraphic cartouche, and a pierced diamond panel of birds and blossom below. The two cartouches carry the auspicious phrase for piled gold and accumulated jade, a traditional wish for prosperity, one character set to each door. Finely incised gilt figures, birds, and flowers fill the black ground, and the original pierced brass handle plates remain in place. Carving and gilding of this kind once dressed the finest Straits Chinese and southern Chinese homes, and a pair at this scale makes a genuine statement. The plain pine reverse has been fitted with brass hooks so the pair hangs as wall art, flanking a doorway, a bed, or a console. It keeps natural company with our Teochew red lacquer cabinet, gilt woodcarving panel, and panel mirror, all from the same carving tradition.
