A tall Tibetan devotional panel worked as a field of Buddhas: row upon row of small seated figures, each in the meditation posture within its own niche, rising the full arched height of the board, with flower rosettes between them and a key-fret border framing the whole. Panels like this belong to the Tibetan tradition of the Buddha field, where the image of the Buddha is repeated in devotion again and again across a single surface. The figures are moulded in relief and finished over a dark ground with gilding now softly worn and rubbed back over long years, so the gold catches only across the raised forms. Down each side hang panels of old silk brocade in faded golds, greens, and rose, tied with red cord and tasselled in the manner of a temple hanging, and the arched board stands on a fitted back support, so it can sit on a console or altar, or hang on a wall. The reverse is honest old timber, weathered and full of character, the record of a piece that has clearly lived. A quietly powerful object with real devotional presence.
