A carved wood standing disciple in the Burmese tradition, hands pressed together in anjali mudra, the gesture of prayer and reverence. The figure is worked from a single piece of wood, the monastic robe gilded and now worn back to a soft interplay of gold and dark lacquer, while the face and bare hands and feet are left in deep polished wood. He stands on a carved lotus base, serene and quietly expressive. At 56 cm he sits beautifully on a console, an altar, a shelf, or beside a larger Buddha, and he keeps the company of our standing Buddha as a natural pairing. Honest age and wear throughout, the patina entirely in keeping with a hand-carved devotional figure.
