A large caparisoned horse in the Rajasthani tradition, a wooden core clad entirely by hand in engraved copper and brass sheet. The whole surface is worked with rosettes, medallions, and a diamond lattice caparison, with a fringed collar, high saddle, and the inward curled ears characteristic of the Marwari horse of northern India. Horses like this were made as showpieces for affluent homes and for temple and processional use, symbols of strength, loyalty, and protection, and the craft belongs to Rajasthan where metalwork was handed down through generations. The copper has aged to a warm tone with green verdigris in the recesses, the honest patina of a genuine older piece. At 99 cm on a 93 cm base it stands as a floor level statement in an entrance or a large room. This is valued as decorative craft with real age rather than as an ancient antique.
