A hand-carved horse in the Tang dynasty manner, caught in the charming pose of nuzzling its raised foreleg. The whitewashed surface is rubbed through to warm wood in the way of old gesso, with saddle blankets and teardrop harness pendants picked out in a soft mineral green, and the whole composition rides on a carved rope-twist base. Tang horses are the most collected form in Chinese decorative art, and this one carries the form’s spirit at a scale that sits happily on a floor, console, or plinth.
