A substantial hand-carved teak pedestal in the European Renaissance manner, carved on all four sides and finished all round, so it stands as beautifully in the middle of a room as it does against a wall. The front face is deeply pierced and carved with a pair of addorsed lions among acanthus scrolls, blossoms, and a rising candelabra stem, framed by a moulded border; the two narrower sides carry upright foliate panels in the same hand, and the back is carved to match. The whole is banded top to bottom with classical ornament: egg-and-dart, palmette, guilloche, and bead-and-reel, rising from a boldly carved anthemion base and stepped plinth. Standing over 120 cm tall, it is built to lift a bust, a vase, a bronze, or a large orchid to eye level and hold the room while doing it. The carving is honest hand-work, crisp and confident, in warm honey teak. A serious decorative anchor for an entryway, a landing, or a quiet corner that deserves a focal point.
